HEMA is much more than tournament training. The disciple includes the study of historical manuals, the interpretation of their contents, as well as covering many forms of martial arts besides the ones traditionally found at tournaments. People study HEMA for a variety of reasons, such as an interest in the puzzle of understanding the text, or for the chance to socialise with people who enjoy swordplay, or to simply get to fence with swords.
Events exist to cater to these interests, such as attending the HEMA for life relay at the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life, meeting the public at council events and showing them HEMA in action, and attending workshops on research at Swordwork.
As details of these events are released each year links to many of them can be found here:
- Confirmed events – usually appear on Facebook in the Brisbane Swordsmanship Community or the Australian HEMA Community
- Save the Dates, provisional only, DO NOT book flights or otherwise spend money based on these dates – here.
Anthony Kung co-presents a workshop on technique refinement, Swordwork 2024.
