We are often asked what is required for beginners:
Physical Ability
There is no physical ability requirement for students of BSIS. We strongly believe in building an inclusive community, and will work with our students to find the best way to make Iberian fencing work for you. You do not need any particular level of fitness or athletic ability. Our hall is wheelchair accessible.
If you have a complex or high risk medical history, you will need a medical clearance to participate from your doctor. Ideally this would be accompanied by listing any activities you are definitely not allowed to participate in.
Age
We take students from 16 years of age, or 14 if there is an accompanying adult also training or present. It’s a great way to share time with family, but if your parent/guardian really isn’t interested, they can stay on the sidelines instead. Our instructors hold blue cards, as do our administration staff and Happiness Officers.
Equipment
You will not need any equipment in order to attend classes. BSIS can provide you with protective glasses, gloves, and a rapier until you become overwhelmed with the desire to own your own.
Clothing
Please wear comfortable clothing and comfortable enclosed shoes, and also preferably long sleeves and long pants/tights.
