About the syllabus

Our syllabus is based on martial traditions that arise out of medieval, Renaissance, and early modern practices in Iberia (Godinho, La Verdadera Destreza), or are strongly influenced by them (Thibault, Neapolitan).

We focus on La Verdadera Destreza sword/rapier, and La Verdadera Destreza sword/rapier and companions. But we will also work on such arts as sabre,  montante, flail,  and jogo do pau.

BSIS classes run to a structured syllabus. Within each grade level, students study under a variety of instructors working from lesson plans.  Classes are planned to teach both techniques and an understanding of the principles underlying them.   Class notes are provided for those who want them.  Students can track their own progress in the grade level Log Book, so that they can ensure they have covered the entire content.  Because of this, students who cannot attend consistently are still able to progress.

Assessment opportunities occur at least once every 3 months. Assessment is based on a standardised format in accordance with our aim to provide a consistent and comparable system.  Students are provided with written feedback.
